Cricket Writers’ Club 199 (Ress 53, Barnfather 5-35) beat Gunnersbury WCC 166-9 (Barnfather 101, Miller 3-19) by 33 runs

The Cricket Writers’ Club Team played their first fixture of the 2025 summer on the early May Bank Holiday weekend, travelling to Barnet to face Gunnersbury Women at Old Elizabethans CC.

CWC XI: Nathan Johns, Yas Rana, Aditya Chaturvedi, Greggers Hensman, Ben Collins, Oscar Ress, Adam Collins, Phil Walker, Andrew Miller, Kit Harris, Alan Gardner

Gunnersbury WCC XII: Anja Peisl, Bhoomika Bhat, Caroline Bolton, Elsa Barnfather, Emily Jones, Hannah Wakeman, Kylie White, Rachana Cambampaty, Ria Raval, Shimako Kato, Steph Mindel, Tanith Moses

In a 35-overs per side affair, CWC elected to bat first and made a strong start, with opener Nathan Johns guiding the first two balls of the match to the boundary. Gunnersbury hit back with a flurry of wickets from Elsa Barnfather, who claimed three wickets in the space of five balls to reduce CWC to 69 for 5 in the 13th over.

Strong contributions from Aditya Chaturvedi at No. 3 (46 off 29) and Phil Walker (43 off 36) aided our recovery, but it was Oscar Ress who anchored the CWC innings with a half-century (54 off 53), batting through to the 32nd over to lift the side to 199.

Elsa Barnfather bagged a five-wicket haul for Gunnersbury, finishing with figures of 7-1-35-5, and then completed an impressive all-round show with a century, scoring 101 off 96 balls.

To add to her superb display against the Cricket Writers’ Club, Barnfather then smashed 29* off 14 to seal Kent’s victory against Middlesex the following day in the first round of the Women’s T20 County Cup!
